3 Great Porch Roof Ideas
Of the three great porch roof ideas, this homeowner planned for a flat roof to save costs. They were installing windows and had us replace the shingle roof while building the back porch roof. Since the roof needed to be replaced, this provided the ideal opportunity to build the back porch. Building a porch roof in Viera by Florida Roofing and Renovations Inc. requires years of experience in roofing and renovations. This homeowner wanted to extend their living space by enlarging the prior smaller porch into a larger screened area. Both sliding glass doors are now inside the new back porch.
Once the porch size was determined, we began the demolition of the existing porch. We then removed the house overhang and soffit in the porch area. Next, we formed and poured a new concrete slab to code. The owner chose poured concrete block columns over wood posts for added strength and durability. The aesthetics of robust concrete columns with stucco are also more desirable than wood posts. We installed LVL beams on the new columns, followed by wood rafters extending from the house’s exterior wall to the porch beams. Once the framing was complete, including the wood sub-fascia, the 4-ply CDX plywood sheeting could be installed using 8d ring-shank nails.
3 Great Porch Roof Ideas
- Flat Roof – Less costly while still achieving a porch roof. Being affordable and easier to construct.
- Shed Roof – Enough angle of roof that water will not sit on the roof, a positive in Florida.
- Pitch Roof – Of the 3 great porch roof ideas, a gable or hip roof can be a seamless addition as if built with the house. It costs a little more, but it looks great.
Material For Porch Roof
We then replaced the roof on the main house with self-adhering underlayment and architectural 130mph shingles. On the new porch roof, we installed a self-adhering low-slope roofing system called Flintlastic by CertainTeed. We applied a knockdown stucco texture to the beams, columns, and above the sliding glass doors. Notice how straight the beams and fascia look in the accompanying pictures.
What We Do
We remove old aluminum porch roofs and install new wooden structural roofs. Alternatively, we can fully enclose old porches, transforming them into new living spaces. We offer homeowners combined roof and renovation packages, saving them money in the process.
