Terrible Roof Job
As a roofing contractor, we encounter terrible roof jobs a few times a year. This job by a previous roofer is why the homeowner called us to fix the mess. The pictures show the inexperience of a roofer who caused more damage.
The Solution
After removing all the lousy roof material, we installed a self-adhered Flintlastic SA system by Certainteed. The system has a base material that adheres to the roof deck. We then installed the drip edge over the base sheet. The drip edge is nailed every 3″ and then primed with a primer. Now, the base roof is fully prepped for the final procedure. We are installing the white cap sheet material over the base. Once the complete system has been installed, the roof will last many years.
The Shingle Tie-in
It’s crucial to install the tie-in correctly when using the Flintlastic SA roof system and a pitched roof. The tie-in process remains the same whether the roof has metal, tile, or shingles. The flat roof material should be installed at least 16″ up the rake and under the roof material on the pitched roof. Ideally, we aim to install as much as 24″ under the pitched material. For this particular roof, we removed four rows of shingles, ran flat roof material up the rake and under the shingles, and then installed new matching shingles in Resawn Shake color. The finished Flintlastic SA roof system looks professionally done, and the roof will no longer leak.
